THE BRITISH RED CROSS ACHIEVES HIGH VOTER TURNOUT IN STAFF ASSOCIATION ELECTIONS.

Charity Voting Initiative: Contested elections highlight successful staff engagement for the well-known British charity, in its first charity voting process using an independent scrutineer.

Client:

The British Red Cross is one of the country’s most recognisable charities. Its volunteers and staff are guided by seven fundamental principles; humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. To uphold these values and to ensure staff has a voice in discussions on issues that affect their employment, representatives are elected from each service area constituency.

Democratic Project:

The British Red Cross recognises that effective staff representation can make a significant contribution to having a positive relationship between the organisational leadership, managers and the employees. To this end, the charity establishes and maintains arrangements that enables staff to nominate and elect representatives. The Red Cross appointed UK Engage to be the independent scrutineer to oversee its Staff Association Election. The charity voting process was especially important as the Red Cross wanted to establish a new cohort of 28 staff representatives.

Solution:

Using solutions from UK Engage’s online democracy suite, staff who wanted to stand for election, were able to complete their application online using a market-leading online nomination platform, which was consistent with the charity’s brand identity. Once all nominations were in, staff members could vote for their colleagues via a secure and easy-to-use online voting system.

Results

For the elections that were contested, engagement levels were very good. The
highest voter turnout was achieved in the Community Equipment Service &
Mobility Aids Services constituency, which received 75% voter turnout, followed by People & Learning (Levels 3-5), which achieved 67% voter turnout.

Client Testimonial

“UK Engage provided the exact service we had agreed.  The staff were all helpful: our questions and concerns were handled professionally.  What could have been a long drawn out process was made quite simple and easy.
